Class 1 Learning Pathway

Course Overview - 67 hours of in truck/in yard/in class learning, plus an additional 8 hours of air brakes training is required. Learners who already hold an Air Brakes Q endorsement may waive this portion of the training.

Prerequisites - Learners must hold an Alberta Class 5 License with the GDL removed, must be at least 18 years old, and have successfully completed the online entry program provided by Alberta Transportation prior to taking the Class 1 Learning Pathway - Core course. Students are required to let NWP know if they prefer a manual or automatic transmission for their training upon registration.

PPE Requirements - Boots/shoes that cover the ankle (No portion of the ankle may be showing, also they must be a snug fit or have laces); Weather-appropriate clothing (that can get dirty) - pants - no shorts unless you have coveralls; Safety vest, safety glasses, gloves

Upon Completion - Graduates are eligible to take the Class 1 road test through the Government of Alberta. Successful completion results in an Alberta-Only Restricted License. To remove the Alberta-only restriction, students must also complete Class 1 Learning Pathway - Competence Building (CLP02).

IMPORTANT – Road Test Requirements
It is the student’s responsibility to book and pay for their own road test and to meet all Government of Alberta requirements for the Class 1 road test including passing the driver's medical exam and Class 1 written test. Please refer to the Government of Alberta website for a detailed requirement listing HERE. As of July 1, 2026 Class 1 and Class 3 road tests are subject to a $250 fuel surcharge.

IMPORTANT - FEE CHANGE - Effective September 1, 2026, fees are increasing to $9500. This will only affect new registrations.
